Star Wars: Rian Johnson (Kinda) Shuts Down Rumors That He’s Directing The Next Entry

The future of Star Wars on film is one big fat, throbbing question mark. What will the new movies ultimately consist of? Will Lucasfilm manage to hit that 2022 release date, especially since they don’t seem to have any directors on deck to helm the next entry? David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have long since stepped away from the responsibilities, and fans aren’t high on Rian Johnson after The Last Jedi divided the fan base.

But that hasn’t stopped rumors from rumoring. With Johnson having just finished up Knives Out and him seemingly being the only one Lucasfilm is currently talking to, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think he couldn’t take on his own movie trilogy. And that’s exactly what rumors point to. But is that the case?

“I’m still talking to Lucasfilm. They haven’t announced anything,” Johnson told Variety. “Every single day there’s a new [rumor]. Until it’s up on, don’t believe it.”

After fans raked him over the coals for two straight years, one couldn’t blame him to want to keep doing his own projects — especially since Knives Out is proving to be such a beloved mystery flick. That being said, who’s to say what’s going to happen?

Under Disney’s watch, Star Wars has become quite the unpredictable beast indeed, so it’s not as though we can actually predict anything with any sort of confidence.
